All our German language courses follow the European Common Frame of Reference for Languages.
In 1991, during an International meeting held by the Swiss Federal Authorities, it was acknowledged that there was a need for a common European framework for languages. The aim was to formulate common objectives to define each level of communication. The framework sets out 6 different levels and upon completion of each level, students are awarded a certificate which can be obtained in any European country offering certification and holds the same weight regardless of whether the language is spoken in that country.
The basic levels are outlined below (or you can find a full description of the objectives for each individual level here).
A1: The level is divided in 3 sub-levels: A1.1, A1.2 and A1.3.
Overall objective: Can understand and use simple everyday expressions
Can exchange information in a simple way and is prone to help.
A2: The level is divided in 3 sub-levels: A2.1, A2.2 and A2.3.
Overall objective: Can process very basic information (personal and family information, local geography, shopping, employment)
Can communicate information in a basic way and in familiar matters.
B1: The level is divided in 3 sub-levels: B1.1, B1.2 and B1.3.
Overall objective: Can comprehend the main points normally encountered at work, school, socializing, etc.
Can deal with most situations and tell experiences, give reasons and explanations.
B2: The level is divided in 3 sub-levels: B2.1, B2.2 and B2.3.
Overall objective: Can understand complex text, including technical discussions. Good degree of fluency can write a detailed text and explain a viewpoint.
C1: The level is divided in 3 sub-levels: C1.1, C1.2 and C1.3.
Overall objective: Can express ideas fluently without much obvious searching for expressions.
Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
Can produce clear, well-structured, detail text on complex topics.
C2: The level is divided in 3 sub-levels: C2.1, C2.2 and C2.3.
Overall objective: Can express themselves spontaneously, at the same level as a native speaker.
