telc A1 and A2: your first German certificates

A1 and A2 are the first two telc German levels, and for many people they are the first official German certificate they earn. A1 shows you can use simple, everyday phrases. A2 shows you can handle short, routine situations. Both are recognised telc certificates, and each exam has four parts: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Which level you need, and what for, is set by the school, employer, or authority asking for it, so check the exact requirement with them.

What A1 and A2 mean

A1 is the starting level: you can introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions, and use basic phrases for everyday needs. A2 is the next step up: you can deal with short, routine tasks, describe your background in simple terms, and manage simple exchanges at the shops, at work, or with neighbours.

What is in the exam?

Each exam has four parts: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. You choose your exam date from Monday to Friday. There is no minimum age for telc, so anyone can sit the level they need.

How much do the A1 and A2 exams cost?

Both the A1 and the A2 exam cost CHF 185. Fees can change, so confirm the current price when you book.
